mural art in public spcaes

Murals are a powerful tool for enhancing the livability and appeal of a city, connecting residents, attracting visitors, and telling the unique story of the city. By transforming blank walls into vibrant works of art, they improve the sense of community, celebrate local culture, and create lasting connections between people and their environment. Murals offer a creative solution that enriches public spaces, strengthens brand awareness, and enhances the overall quality of life.

People and Spaces

The livability of a city depends on factors like work, leisure, and the sense of community among residents. Murals enhance public spaces by telling the unique story of a city or neighborhood, fostering connections between people and art. MooieMuur specializes in creating these storytelling murals, offering an interactive experience that draws smiles, sparks thought, and strengthens city marketing efforts. In a multicultural society like the Netherlands, murals can bridge cultural divides, promoting unity and dialogue among diverse communities. Additionally, murals serve as a deterrent to graffiti, as street artists respect existing artwork, reducing cleaning costs while enriching public spaces with meaningful, cohesive art.

City marketing

Murals and city marketing are a match made in heaven, connecting residents, attracting visitors, and telling a city’s unique story through art. MooieMuur brings these stories to life, enhancing urban livability and supporting local economies. Murals also deter graffiti, saving cities on cleaning costs, and provide a platform for non-profits to raise awareness. Moreover, murals offer cities a stream of income by allowing companies to sponsor artwork on public buildings, funding community amenities. Through thoughtful design, street art not only beautifies but also unifies and energizes the city.

Anti-Graffiti

Illegally applied graffiti can harm a city’s livability and appeal, but murals offer a powerful solution by deterring graffiti and enhancing spaces. In graffiti culture, artists avoid "crossing out" another mural, making murals effective in trouble spots or temporary barriers, like construction sites. MooieMuur collaborates with businesses, local governments, and property owners to create street art that prevents illegal graffiti and adds visual value, transforming "target walls" into canvases that inspire rather than annoy. This approach saves on cleaning costs, enriches the community, and provides a creative, lasting alternative to graffiti vandalism.

awareness campaigns

In a world that is slowly hardening and people are increasingly becoming more isolated, it is important to seek out connections to make people aware of each other. You are not alone, you may be seen, you may be there. Murals have the power to create awareness with everyone who comes into contact with them. Every awareness campaign starts with the message that needs to be conveyed.

frequently asked questions

01.

What does a mural cost for a municipality or housing corporation?

The price depends on the surface area, the location, and whether a resident participation process is included. After a conversation about the goal — liveability, city marketing or anti-graffiti — you receive a tailored quote. Request one via info@mooiemuur.nl or +31 6 170 68 300.

01.

How long does a resident participation project take, from first conversation to completion?

This varies per project, since residents and stakeholders are actively involved in the design. Expect a few weeks for conversations and design, after which execution usually takes a few days to a week depending on the surface area.

01.

We take care of that for you. We coordinate with the municipality on aesthetics committee approval and permits, so you as the client don't need to worry about it.

01.

Does MooieMuur involve residents or a neighbourhood association in the design?

Regularly, yes. A mural that tells a neighbourhood's story works best when residents help shape it. On request, we organise sessions with residents or a neighbourhood association as part of the design process.

01.

Can a mural in a public space also generate income or co-financing?

Yes. Municipalities increasingly make municipal buildings available for company mural campaigns, generating income for things like school or sports facility maintenance. We're happy to think along about these options.

01.

Who paints the murals for municipalities and housing corporations?

Most are painted by Karski (Roy Valk), active in street art since 2008, with experience including housing corporation Staedion in The Hague. For larger projects, we bring in artists from our network.

01.

Can MooieMuur handle multiple locations within one municipality or neighbourhood?

Certainly, we do this regularly. Each mural gets its own accent, while the coherence between locations strengthens the story of the neighbourhood or municipality.

01.

What's the difference between a mural for city marketing and one for anti-graffiti?

City marketing murals focus on telling the story of a city or neighbourhood, aimed at attracting residents and visitors. Anti-graffiti murals focus on transforming a problem spot into artwork that prevents illegal graffiti. The two can overlap, depending on the location.

01.

How does a municipality or housing corporation start a mural project?

Get in touch by phone, email or the contact form. We discuss the location, the goal, and any resident involvement, and put together a proposal and quote based on that.
