Street Art in Amsterdam. The Albert Cuyp Market. Who doesn't know this iconic place? A place that both real Amsterdammers like to visit and is a magnet for people outside the city. The idea for a work of art arose in 2021, when Tim Rodermans and Karski (Roy Valk) spoke to market traders about the wall full of graffiti on the corner of Albert Cuypstraat. The market traders were enthusiastic about the idea of turning this wall into a beautiful eye-catcher for the Albert Cuyp Market.
With the permission of the property owner and support from the municipality of Amsterdam, Tim and Roy got to work on turning this piece of Albert Cuyp into a true work of art. The inspiration for the work of art is its namesake Albert Cuyp, a Dutch painter from the seventeenth century. Tim and Roy made various designs from which the neighborhood could then choose.
The neighborhood chose a painting inspired by a portrait that Albert Cuyp made in 1651, which now bears the title 'Portrait of a young man, possibly Jacob Francken'.
