In the heart of Amsterdam, at the corner of Sarphatistraat and Weesperplein, a massive bird sits amidst bright red poppies. Surrounded by traffic, brickwork, and the daily hustle and bustle, the mural brings a striking touch of nature to this urban setting.

The artwork was created in collaboration with fellow muralist Tim Rodermans. The artists had previously worked together on a mural on this same façade. While that earlier piece was created during the coronavirus pandemic and alluded to social distancing, the wall now tells a completely different story.

A new mural for a changing city

As the city changed, so did this wall. The previous mural made way for a colorful artwork in which nature, freedom, and space play a much more significant role.

The façade itself also becomes part of the design; the bird and flowers do not stay neatly within the painted blue area. Wings, branches, and poppies break through the frame, adding an extra dimension to the work.

Especially in a busy location like Sarphatistraat, this mural demonstrates the value art can add to public spaces—not just to a single wall, but to the entire neighborhood. It speaks to local residents, passersby, and anyone who happens to look up while on the go.
