Mural Uilenstede – VU Sports center

A sports centre is all about movement. In our view, the exterior should reflect that energy. For the VU Sports Centre, we created a colourful mural on the rear façade of the main facility at Uilenstede in Amstelveen.

The façade overlooks an area where many students live and pass by daily. The new mural has completely transformed what was previously a rather anonymous rear elevation. This wasn't achieved simply by adding a splash of colour, but through a design that brings together sport, science, and dynamism.

From brick wall to eye-catcher

The VU Sports Centre has been part of this area for over half a century, bringing together students, staff, local residents, and other athletes. More than 35 different sports are offered at Uilenstede, and the location also serves as a hub for education and research.

For the design, we translated that world onto the wall. Athletic elements, movement, and colour combine to form a large-scale image that reflects the activities taking place inside. In this way, the façade itself becomes part of the sports centre's identity.

The project also aligns with the broader development of the Uilenstede/Kronenburg area. The Municipality of Amstelveen is working to revitalize the district, aiming to create more space for living, working, and social interaction. The mural was created in collaboration with STIPO and with the support of the VU Sports Centre.
