Translating an existing artwork directly onto a massive wall, that was the precise assignment we received via Acrylicize for Spotify’s new office in Amsterdam.
The original artwork is by artist Aleksandra Bokova, better known as by_fabulex. Roy Valk from MooieMuur was tasked with bringing her design to life on a large scale without losing the character of the original. This was not a matter of free interpretation, but rather a precise translation of art onto the wall.
Working from existing artwork requires a different approach than creating a mural from scratch. Proportions that seem natural on a small scale must remain exact on a large wall. The same applies to lines, color blocks, shapes, and the finest details.
Consequently, numerous stencils were created for the Spotify mural. The image was then built up layer by layer. A technical process requiring every shape to land in exactly the right spot before the next layer could be applied.
That is precisely where the craftsmanship of this project lies. The goal was not to put a personal spin on the design, but to translate by_fabulex’s work as faithfully as possible to a completely different scale and surface. The result is a piece of art that has become an integral part of Spotify’s Amsterdam interior, while preserving the artist’s original visual language.
Not every mural project starts with a blank slate. An existing illustration, campaign visual, or piece of artwork can also serve as the starting point. MooieMuur translates existing designs into large-format murals, taking into account scale, surface, color, technique, and execution. This ensures the integrity of the original design is maintained, even when it suddenly covers an entire wall.
